Engineering mechanics

Basic definition

1.Rigid body:
     A body is said to be rigid,if the relative positions of any two particles do not change under the action of the forces acting on it.

2.Mass:
       The quantity of matter contained by a body is called mass.
                         The mass of a body will not change unless the body is damaged and part of it is physically separated.
                                            If a body is taken out in a spacecraft, the mass will not change, but weight may change due to the change in gravitational force.
              Mathematically

                                  F= ma

                               m= F/a
3.Weight:
       Weight is the force with which body is attracted towards the centre of earth.
                              Or
       The weight of the body is defined as the gravitational force exerted on it due to earth.

4.Length:
      Length is a physical quantity which is used as a concept to measure linear distances. Actually meter is the unit of length.

5.Time:
      The time is a physical quantity which is the measure of successional of events. The successive event selected is the relation of earth about its own axis and this is called a day.

Engineering mechanics

What is engineering mechanics? and it's types.

Mechanics:
      The branch of physical science that deals with the state of rest or the state of motion of bodies is known as mechanics.
                              Or
      Mechanics is the branch of physical science which deals with the force and their effects on the body on which they act.

Engineering mechanics:
      It is the branch of applied science which deals with the law and principal of mechanics along with their applications to engineering problems.

Types of engineering mechanics:
       It may divided into following two main groups -
                  1.Statics
                  2.Dynamics

   1.Statics: statics is the branch of engineering mechanics which deal with the force and their effects,while acting upon the bodies at rest.

  2.Dynamics: dynamics is the branch of engineering which deal with the force and their effects,while acting upon the bodies at rest.

        It can be further classified into two types -
                 1.Kinematics
                 2.kinetics

   1.Kinematics: it is the branch of dynamics which deals with the study of bodies without considering the force acting on them. It deals with the space-time relationship of the motion of a body.

   2.Kinetics: it is the branch of dynamics which deals with the study of motion of bodies by considering the force acting on them.
